Matthew 5: 38-42- Eye for an Eye
Matthew 5: 38- 42- “ You have heard said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would s ue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.” There is something within us that wants to get back at someone who has hurt us or who has done something wrong to us. We want retribution. We want the other person to pay for what they did to us. Jesus is telling us we must change the way we think about wrongs against us. Jesus is telling us it is not our place to get back at someone . We are to let it go. Jesus will be the one who will balance the situation, not us.
