John 1: 1-5
Read John 1: 1-5-
John’s introduction of what he was about to write was written so no one would question what it was about. John was an uneducated fisherman who was called by Jesus directly into following Him and being one of a select few men who would be asked to follow and then spread Jesus’ message to all he met. John dealt directly with who Jesus was. Jesus was God and always had been. Jesus is life to everything He created on earth and in the heavens. John equates life with light and is quick to point out that wherever Jesus went, His light lingered and did not go away. People did not forget their experiences with Jesus. That holds true today. People who have encountered Jesus never forget it. Yes, there are those who steer long distances away from Jesus, but the light is always there, and they know it. In the immediate past, there was an advertising slogan for a motel chain that said, “We’ll leave the light on for you.” Jesus was the first who could say He would always leave the light on for us.
John spoke of Jesus being the Word and the Word was Jesus. That Word is the ongoing light in our world. We talk of the Bible being the Word of God. It is the Word of God, it is the Word of Jesus, it is the light in our world. John finishes this first important paragraph by saying, “The light shines through the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it.” We can take comfort in knowing that Jesus’ light is here to stay and will only become brighter, either by us accepting Christ and spending time in the “light”, His Word, or when He returns to earth to be God and Lord over all of the earth. If you ever wondered about a good way to begin a book, this is it.
