John 1: 35-37- Who Are We Following?

Read John 1: 35-37- The following day, John was again standing with two of his disciples. (36) As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and the declared, “Look!  There is the Lamb of God!” (37) Then John’s two disciples turned and followed Jesus.

Look at the level of decision making these two disciples of John the Baptist had.  John said, “There is Jesus, the Messiah.” They immediately started following Jesus.  Looking at the scriptures, there doesn’t appear to be much discussion or spending time wondering what John might think.  They were prepared.  They were prepared because they were listening and believing in the message John the Baptist had.  These disciples of John’s were not listening and believing in John the Baptist.  It was his message they believed in.  That is what caused their decision making to be so quick and easy.

Many Christians today are attracted to personalities in churches, and they are actually following certain Christian pastors and teachers and not necessarily following what Jesus would have them do.  Are they following after the Holy Spirit and the life of Jesus or are they following Christian personalities?  This is a quick and easy lesson for us to learn.  Our focus must be on Jesus and not the other trappings and gimmicks that may have been conjured up by some of these spiritual personalities with the intent of their actions supposedly being on Jesus.  John the Baptist knew it was time for him to be seen less and less and for Jesus to be all that was seen.  We need to have that approach also.  We need to focus on Jesus or point others to Jesus and if we see those around us following us, they need to be quickly redirected.  “Jesus is the answer, for the world today.”
