Matthew 12: 33-37- Responsible for Our Words

Matthew 12: 33-37-

Jesus is giving us a life lesson in these five verses.

“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

I need to understand the condition of my heart is going to be evident in what I say. I am sure there are some people who can hide their true feelings but, given time, their true feelings, opinions and emotions will find their way out in their words and actions. My heart is the root of my speech. Jesus tells me the importance of my words when He tells us we will be responsible for “every careless word we speak.”

The language in our society is digressing in words being commonplace with some people that were once forbidden in public. This reveals a digression of the heart. People are quicker than ever to criticize and demean others with their words because it is coming more common to do this. Again, it reflects the condition of their hearts. I know I need to pay more attention to the words I chose and the sentiments I want to convey. Jesus is telling me it is my responsibility to be judicious because others will know me by what I say and do.
