Matthew 27: 15-25- Measuring Our Words
Read Matthew 27: 15-25-
The chief priests and elders knew they had an opportunity to be rid of Jesus. They knew in their hearts that Jesus was a threat to their positions. So, they brought Jesus to Pilate, but Pilate was a politician and was working for a way to skirt the issue. Even Pilate’s wife told him he need to stay away from the situation because there was no fault in Jesus and she had even had dreams about the situation. Verses 24 and 25 says, ‘When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.” (25) And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”’
The multitude had no idea what they were saying. To accept the killing of Jesus and then include their own children in the responsibility was egregious. What we say matters. I need to be very careful about what I say and think through the words I use. I need to especially be careful when I may be very emotional about something. Many people in our world today say outrageous things in an effort to be recognized.
As Christians, we need to measure our words carefully and work to realize the situations we are in. I want to make sure I am not oblivious to the context of my situations like the multitude calling for Jesus’ death.
Proverbs 1: 5-6- (5) A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, (6) to understand a proverb and an enigma, the words of the wise and their riddles.
