Luke 2: 51-52- Respecting Parents
Luke 2: 51-52-
“(51) Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. (52) And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”
These two verses cover a large amount of time. My first lesson is that Jesus was subject to His parents. That is a lesson that is a difficult lesson for many people to learn. It is one thing to be subject to our parents and respect one’s parents and another thing to allow parents to be oppressive. This can become a difficult topic to discuss and a lengthy subject with many “what if” situations grounded in it. We need to understand Jesus’ intent and how He followed up on this intent. That is our example regardless of how old we may be and how old our parents may be. There is an expectation of respect Jesus is demonstrating that should be done and He even did that while on the cross.
The second lesson for me is that verse 52 says Jesus grew in wisdom and respect. Jesus spent years fermenting His position, learning and yearning respect as a young man. Regardless of our age, we should be working to gain wisdom and earn people’s respect. We need to see this as a lifelong goal, not a goal that has an end date.
Proverbs 11:27- He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, but trouble will come to him who seeks evil.
