Luke 5: 36-39- Focusing on Jesus' Principles

Luke 5: 36-39-

Jesus spent His time teaching and working to meet the needs of the people around Him. That in itself is a lesson. Jesus started teaching in this passage that the Jewish legalism was not necessarily spiritually focused and His example showed what could happen. In verses 36 and 37 we read this, 'Then He spoke a parable to them, "No one puts apiece from a new garment on an old one, otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. (37) And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined."

We get comfortable doing things we have done for a very long time and do not see a need to change. Sometimes that is okay, but Jesus was emphasizing the need to view their religion differently. Their spiritual focus needed to be on God first and others second. We need to make sure we respect rituals but not allow them to dominate our purpose. Our purpose needs to be God-focused first and other people second.

Proverbs: 11:27- He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, but trouble will come to him who seeks evil.
